Orthographic Projections : Apartment model

Apart from assembling the house, we also had to draw orthographic projections of the apartment. Ms Aida taught us this because this is part of basic knowledge of being a interior design. The ability to draw out orthographic projections is essential to being a good designer as well as choosing the right sofas for the living room. This was very tedious for me because there were small annoying parts that i would forget and this just made things messy. In the end, I asked help from my classmates and i understood. Ms Aida and Ms Shamila also assisted me as they saw I was very lost and frustrated.

At the end of the assignment I looked at my projections and said that I needed to improve. This was just a test of skill, a skill that needs to be mastered.

Apartment Model (Group Discussion)

After receiving the following floor plans to make the small apartment model. My group mates and I hustled together and discussed how we are to design the interior. Rahim, my group mate suggested alot of good ideas and dimensions for interior utilities. Basic dimensions for standard sized toilets, sinks, chairs and other furniture.

I feel like got a good start on this. Other than that, we decided to split the work, Fiona will be measuring the necessary measurements of everything we cut and, I will be cutting the pieces and Rahim will be assembling them in to furnitures.

Orthographic Projections

Orthographic Projections is a drawing method that allows object features
to be projected onto an imaginary plane. The views that can be seen from different angles such as Plans, Elevation & Sections. One of the many approaches in handling this method is imagining in the object in a glass box.
The in class assignment that was given to us was pretty easy of a few objects. All helping us in defining the different views and how it helps our brain interpret it.

Thinking In Perspectives.

Our next in class activity was to draw in perspective. Everyday objects are encouraged to help us in this assignment. We learned how to draw in one-point perspective and two-point perspective. I have done a little bit of this exercise back in foundation but learning more in depth about this help me understand to see clearer and literally thinking in perspectives.
I chose to use an arm chair for a one-point perspective and an bed side table for my two-point perspective.

The next class we, learned how to estimate without a ruler. This was really interesting lesson because drawing perspective was really fun to see and imagine. We tested our skills that day with drawing simple interior spaces we printed out.

I thought mine turned out pretty good despite not using a ruler but still had improvement to work on.

Assignments were given to us and they were to do 1-point perspective and 2-point perspective on interior spaces of our choosing. They needed to be drawn in pen, so i used pencil first for the construction lines and then drawn in pen. Another criteria for the spaces was to add a human figure in to them.

Contour drawing

1st class of Design Communication, we were taught about contour drawing. This basically means drawing with your eyes. What ever line we see, we draw it.The end result doesn't matter -
what is important is carefully observing the subject.
The best practice is by NOT lifting your pen / pencil. This is to be done by using one continuous line. Overlapping lines is encouraged. We were told not to rush because that will just make our work messy and too also concentrate on observing every detail.
After this lesson was finished, assignment was given to draw out our capsicums and lady fingers in different tonal values. About tonal values, we learned that while lines are essential to the task of delineating contour and shape of the object, we rely on the rendering of tonal values, in order to accentuate shape, light, mass and space.
